How to use it
- 1Add the HEIC or HEIF photo.
- 2Set the JPEG quality — 80 keeps detail at roughly a third of the size.
- 3Convert and download the JPG.
Why HEIC is awkward
HEIC is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It stores the same picture in roughly half the space of JPEG, but it is patent-encumbered and most browsers deliberately ship without a decoder. That is why so many HEIC converters upload your photo to a server.
This page does not. A WebAssembly build of libheif is bundled with the site and downloads the first time you convert, so decoding happens on your device even in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. The first conversion is slower than the ones after it while that decoder loads.
The reliable alternative on iPhone
You can avoid conversion entirely: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes the camera shoot JPEG. To convert existing photos, AirDropping or emailing them to a non-Apple device usually produces JPG automatically.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did my HEIC file fail to load?
- Almost always because it is a multi-image burst or a Live Photo container rather than a single still. Export one photo from the Photos app and convert that.
