Picking a target format

WebP is the default worth reaching for on the web: it is smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality and, unlike JPEG, it supports transparency. Every current browser reads it.

JPEG remains the safest format for anything that will be emailed, printed by a third party, or opened in older software. PNG is for flat-colour graphics, screenshots with text, and anything needing a transparent background.

Transparency is lost when you convert to JPEG

JPEG has no alpha channel. Converting a transparent PNG to JPEG fills the transparent areas — here they are flattened onto white. If you need a small file and transparency, convert to WebP instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
Yes, once. JPEG is lossy, so the first encode discards some detail. At quality 85 or above the difference is hard to see on a photograph.
Can I convert to AVIF?
Not yet. Browsers can decode AVIF but most cannot encode it, so an AVIF output would require server processing. Input AVIF files are supported.
