The usual reason: size
A photograph saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same picture as JPG, because PNG cannot use the perceptual tricks that lossy compression relies on. Converting is the fastest way to fix an oversized PNG.
What happens to transparent areas
JPEG cannot store transparency. Any transparent or semi-transparent pixel is composited onto white before encoding. If the graphic is meant to sit on a coloured background, convert to WebP instead so the alpha channel survives.
