Where TIFF comes from

TIFF is standard output for flatbed scanners, professional photography and print production because it is lossless and can carry layers, multiple pages and CMYK colour. Those same features make it unusable on the web: files run to tens of megabytes and browsers cannot display them.

No browser has a built-in TIFF decoder, so this page carries one: UTIF, a pure-JavaScript decoder that runs in the tab. Uncompressed, LZW, PackBits and Deflate TIFFs decode reliably; layered CMYK files from print software should be flattened to RGB first.

Multi-page TIFF

A scanned document TIFF may hold many pages. Only the first is exported here. For multi-page scans, converting to PDF is usually the better route.

Frequently asked questions

My TIFF will not open — is the file broken?
Usually it is a CMYK or layered file from print software, or JPEG-in-TIFF compression. Flatten it to RGB and re-save, then convert here.
